Hou Chun Ming 侯俊明 is a well-known artist from Taiwan who represented the country at the Venice Biennale twice. He is best known for his woodcuts touching on political and personal topics. In the show at CUHK he presented a site-specific iteration of his Asian Father Interview Project. He did what the title says, and then transformed the responses into his signature style drawings, accompanied by rich textual and documentary material. It took some time if one wanted to study it in detail, assuming a knowledge of Chinese. But even when one browsed through the show, the large size drawings emanated an energy that facilitated the engagement and understanding. I just read a few text snippets, but they were easily related to the imagery surrounding them. Hou painted a few large size images in rough lines onto a constellation of cheap large carry bags, which were to signify the immigrant background of the majority of Hong Kong people. The moments captured from the interviews and their simple visual transformation were touching in their expression of the complex attitudes and feelings between two generations separated both in time and their sexual orientation, but still undeniably connected.
