An exhibition of student’s work at City University of Hong Kong created under the guidance of Adrian Wong. A mixture of really bad sculpture, boring sculpture and some pretty good pieces too. The biggest ‘fails’ for me were those sculptures utilizing toilet paper – probably the author’s thought of it as shocking, but it just proved utterly boring. An apple + arduino sculpture with the switch to the installation covered with some gooey disgusting stuff was as bad as the brief required – it actually succeeded in being bad. Other artists failed being bad, but produced quite nice works, e.g. a sculpture of used cigarette butts (a large circle shape on a pedestal) not only looked visually good, but it also produced an incredibly strong smell, a truly memorable work. Another artist displayed rotten meat from a market in a sealed glass jar – simple and beautiful.
