Gagosian: Thomas Houseago “Psychedelic Brothers – Drawn Paintings”

Hong Kong, May 27 – August 13, 2016, http://www.gagosian.com

Photo0881For this show Gagosian Hong Kong removed all partitions. Only one row of mid-size drawn paintings (by a sculptor) was present. Untitled-1On the shorter ends of the room, two slightly larger canvases were placed, titled “Fathers Ghost I (astronaut)” and “Fathers Ghost III (dancer).” Other canvases were uniform in their sizes, as well as motives and titles (“Psychedelic Brother I, II, III, IV, V, VI and VII”). Only a different color treatment set them apart. An array of colors seems to have been selected in order to provide a matching choice for whatever the potential buyer’s sofa color and preference was. The motive has been the same throughout: a schematic frontal view of a skull-like face, deconstructed into geometrical line art. The motive seemed to be taken from Houseago’s large size sculptures, and here replicated for those who prefer to collect paintings in a two-dimensional format. The invoking of Giacometti, Brancusi and Picasso in the press release did not provide much further foundation on which to build one’s imagination, wishing to see more than a swatch-like line-up of painterly products for sale.
