Yogiga is an independent space in a Hongdae cellar, mainly focusing on experimental performances. This evening was a hosted event, bringing in a screening program and two live art performances by Taiwanese artists. The screening was something to suffer through rather than enjoy: The space was not a cinema, the chairs were not comfortable, and the even organizer even did not know how to make the movie file full screen (and kept struggling with that for the first 20 minutes of the screening or so)…. The videos itself were very different, from 3D animation to live video, I could not find any common line or relating point, neither between them nor to anything specifically “Taiwanese”.
The live performances saved the day on this evening. First was Wen-hsin Teng 鄧雯馨, who came across as rather shy and nerdy, performing her computer mix of 8-bit tunes and computer game screencap VJing. But still, it was lively enough to keep the attention throughout the performance. YuJun Ye 葉育君 was the star of the event with her absurd theatre performance. It was a very simple performance, but funny and engaging for the audience. It’s quite rare to see an art performance that will make people laugh, yet think at the same time.
