Daegu, October 2015, http://www.daeguartfactory.kr/
DAF is located in an industrial area of the city which has a feeling similar to Mullae or Dongmyo in Seoul: Lots of small metalwork workshops, shops selling tools or raw materials, etc. The DAF is a rather large building, with an exhibition floor, two studio floors and a nice coffee shop on the ground floor. It is a mixture of a museum, culture center and art residency.
Unfortunately (as mentioned in my previous post – don’t try to make a one day trip from Seoul to Daegu!) I had virtually zero time to see the exhibition and the space. My first impression (mostly by the coffee shop and the ground-floor-to-roof lobby area) was that of a friendly and welcoming space. I also managed to run by a books store that seemed to be managed by book society, and bookstores give me a friendly feeling too.
The exhibition space was spacious and professional. As far as I could tell in my 5 minute visit to the show, it consisted mainly of Korean (or local?) artists and the works were something that could be expected, but did not stand out too much: Well-set up large scale installations, playing with one or another material, addressing emotions and materiality. Probably more than that, but that’s all I could glimpse.
