Exhibition of one of the noted American abstract expressionist painter’s works. Abstract expressionism, the first ‘truly American’ style got a different flavor since its role as CIA’s cultural weapon during the Cold War has been confirmed. While the exhibition covered a period from the 1940’s until 1980’s most of the larger size works were from the 70’s or 80’s, i.e. the later stages of the artist’s career.
Motherwell’s works on display strangely hovered between free gesticulation and much more orderly geometric shapes, with one small yellow work even reminiscent of Paul Klee line-mosaic.
Hung on the all-white walls, the works looked isolated and lonely, like wares in an under-supplied supermarket.
The highlight of the show: Two big yellow canvases, both very similar, with a dent outlined in black lines in the top middle of the canvas: One titled “The Mexican Window” and the other “The Great Wall of China”…
